SPecialist heavy plant technician

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Specialist Heavy Plant Technician will be responsible for the inspection, preparation, maintenance, and repair of heavy and specialist plant machinery. This is a varied, hands-on role that includes PDI inspections, LOLER examinations, machine specification and commissioning, mobile breakdowns, and technical fault diagnosis across the Tru7 fleet.
This position suits a highly competent technician with strong diagnostic skills and the ability to work independently in a mobile environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out Pre-Delivery Inspections (PDI’s) on new and returning plant, ensuring all machinery is compliant, correctly specified, and fit for hire or site use.
- Undertake LOLER examinations on applicable plant, attachments, and lifting equipment, ensuring statutory compliance and accurate certification.
- Diagnose, service, maintain, and repair heavy plant machinery including excavators, ADTs, dozers, telehandlers, and specialist equipment.
- Prepare, commission, and set up specialist and bespoke machines, including auxiliary hydraulics and attachments.
- Respond to mobile breakdowns across East Anglia, delivering efficient, high-quality on-site repairs and fault resolution.
- Complete and manage warranty claim forms, liaising with manufacturers and suppliers to ensure accurate submissions and cost recovery.
- Maintain accurate service records, inspection reports, LOLER documentation, and job sheets in line with company procedures.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of GPS and machine control systems, including Xwatch (training will be provided).
- Adhere to all company and site health & safety requirements, always promoting safe working practices.
- Communicate effectively with engineering management, hire desk, and operations teams to support fleet availability and performance.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Heavy Plant Technician / Fitter within plant hire, construction, demolition, quarrying, or related sectors.
- Strong mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical diagnostic capability.
- Experience carrying out LOLER examinations (or willingness to obtain certification if not already held).
- Previous involvement with PDI inspections and machine commissioning is highly desirable.
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Construction Plant Maintenance, Agricultural Plant Maintenance, or equivalent (essential).
- Full UK driving licence (essential).
- Experience with GPS, telematics, or safety systems such as Xwatch is an advantage, though training will be provided.
- Reliable, well-organised, and able to work independently in a mobile role.
